One of the first decisions a company will have to make when considering a CRM system is whether to use a cloud version (online) or a version that's installed and maintained on their own servers (On-Premise). It's a decision that has significant implications and should be made only after carefully considering many factors such as cost, security, timeframe, etc.
Some of the main advantages of an ONLINE implementation:
- No investment in hardware and software required
- No dedicated resources needed to maintain the CRM framework
- Pay only for actual use
- Constant backups
- Available anytime/anywhere using an internet connection and web browser
- Relatively quick deployment
Some of the main advantages of an ON-PREMISE implementation:
- Not limited by a possible slow internet (or NO internet) connection
- Full control over the technical development around CRM
- No risk of storing sensitive data in the cloud
Conclusion:
The benefits of cloud installations seems to outweigh the benefits of On-Premise and, as a result, we see a strong trend in businesses deciding on cloud versions of not just CRM, but most other popular Line-of-Business applications as well (Office, Accounting systems, etc.). I don't foresee a change in this trend happening anytime soon and, in fact, expect it to continue to rise as security improves and cloud storage models continue to decline in cost. Of course, with the speed in which technology changes nowadays, there's no telling what's coming around the corner that could possibly turn this whole paradigm upside down and present entirely (as of now) unheard of and unimaginable options.
